Lenny's Life Lessons

People often say they got to Texas as soon as they could. Well, this dachshund says the same thing. I was running the roads of Georgia, alone, flea and tick covered, homeless, and ended up at a rescue owned by Lori Hartman and her partner, Jim Larson. They took one look at me and knew I belonged in Texas where your former dachshund writers Patches and Herman grew up! Yep, I live with that crazy vegetarian lady, Lindy Schulz.

I have heard so many stories about life in your town of San Saba. I even got to meet Mandy McCoury a few weeks ago when she came to visit. I never wanted her to leave, but mom explained she has a life back in San Saba and her own dogs to love. Hey, I am a dachshund, and we do think life is all about us always!

We live in the Houston area, but before you get those eyes rolling with thinking I am a snobby big city dachshund, I see armadillos, deer, raccoons, rabbits, coyotes, wild hogs, opossums and squirrels, every single day right in my backyard. No, I do not live in a zoo but in an enormous apartment complex where my backyard is a wildlife reserve. This place is home to mom, about 30 minutes from Galveston where she was born, far enough from the city to be rural but close enough to be five minutes from every service imaginable.

I do not have to check trash cans for food anymore, but I am a dachshund so I do anyway! I may be the only dachshund mom has ever had who doesn’t bark, but I refuse to be the only one who doesn’t act like I am not starving to death! I am also the boss of everything! I often order breakfast at midnight, request walks in 15-minute intervals because I have two paths and like to do the dog walk first and then my neighbor visiting check second. I may treat mom as if she is my personal servant, but I love her to chicken bits and I love you guys the same way. I hope you will learn to feel the same way about me!
