An event filled weekend full of Professional Cowgirls and Cowboys from across Texas and the nation provided great entertainment in spite the 100° heat. Legendary funny man Leon Coffee kept people in stitches while Johnny Hoyle of Cadillac Rodeo Company pulled off a seamless performance with some of the best Rodeo stock in the state! A Saturday morning tradition, the San Saba Rodeo Parade down Main Street was led off by the nation’s colors posted by the Williamson County Sheriff’s Posse followed by the Grand Marshall, Kay Nettleship representing the Nettleship fam-ily ranching heritage of Rafter Cross Ranches. Floats from local businesses and multigenerational horseback riders filled the streets while spectators cheered and waved back. Then back to Rodeo, it wasn’t just the contestants, putting on a great show, the mutton bustin and calf scramble are a crowd favorite. Children from all over get to experience the big lights of the arena while the littlest ones muster up their courage to climb on a sheep and get a feel for the excitement of competition. Protective equipment provided by McCoy‘s Building Supply such as helmets and vests give them a true experience while keeping them safe.
Later in the program, the older children are given an opportunity in the calf scramble. One of the fans in the bleachers described it as a bunch of ants coming out of every hole as the kids rush to the start line with Leon Coffee. When the flag is dropped the children race to see who can be the first to pull a flag off a calf’s tail that is turned loose into the arena. They are vying for one of eight bicycles over two nights donated by Capital Farm Credit. The weekend wrapped up with a dance featuring Grammy award-winning singer Rick Trevino and his band.
