The San Saba Volunteer Fire Department was called to a structure fire around 5:15 p.m. Saturday, October 1st, on North 9th Street in San Saba. Crews arrived to find a shop fully engulfed in flames and battled the blaze for four hours with two pumper trucks and two brush trucks before containment. The shop and a nearby camper were total losses, but volunteers were able to save a house attached to the shop. The house suffered severe smoke and water damage. No one was injured in the fire, but unfortunately the family’s dog succumbed to the smoke and fumes. The cause of the blaze is unknown as of this writing.
Shortly thereafter, exhausted crews were summoned to a reported wildfire off Sloan Road, only to discover upon arriving that it was a controlled burn. PLEASE – if you plan on burning, call the Sheriff’s Department to inform emergency responders that you will be doing so, and save the County the expense of dispatching fire crews and sheriff’s deputies for no reason. Volunteers lose time away from families (and sleep) only to learn there is an unreported controlled burn.
After midnight, VFD members were again called to respond to a gas leak at a residence off Hwy. 190 east. A gas company crew arrived later to repair the leak after the VFD shut off gas service to the home.
It’s been another rough year on firefighting equipment, and your support at the upcoming steak supper will again be greatly appreciated.
