George Ray McHorse was born May 11, 1931, in San Saba. He was the oldest of five children born to Robert Alier McHorse and Velma Yadabell Nicholson McHorse. His momma would say that he took his ‘oldest’ status serious but occasionally was the cause for sleepless nights!
Fast forward to April 9, 1950, when he married Thelma Nell Walker at her parents house in San Saba. This past anniversary, they celebrated 72 years together with their five children, George, Jr., Jack, Marsha, Pam and Todd.
Very early in their marriage, George became a minister and would learn from his early smaller churches to take the ‘family oriented’ worship with him as the churches grew larger. By 1965, they had five children when God called George to join the Navy and while his first deployment was meant to be Camp Pendleton, California, as these things go, he ended up ‘in country’ in Vietnam.
Here's a short list of travels: Vietnam, Corpus Christi, Vietnam, Camp Lejeune, and then to the Norfolk, Virginia area where between being out at sea, he also had four different duties with land based chapels, Camp Lejeune, Cherry Point, Twenty-Nine Palms, and then back to Corpus Christi and retirement as a Captain.
There are many people who, once they met him, knew a lot about him and his family. Yep, you might say that he had the ‘gift of gab!’ Mostly he wanted to make you feel comfortable in whatever situation you met him in. [Not to take away from the officer or dad who might have you in front of him to ‘discuss’ a possible infraction connected to your name!!] There are so many family, friends and just acquaintances, from Texas to the west coast and to the east coast, who will miss the stories that he could tell. Picture the extremely huge crowd waiting for him at heaven’s gates late in the afternoon of Wednesday, September 14, 2022.
He was preceded in death by his wife [and partner in crime] of 72 years; his parents, Alier and Velma; his sister, Geneva; his brothers, Larry and Kenneth; his granddaughter, Angela Carroll and his great-great grandson, Cameron Harbour.
