33 Years Ago August 3, 1989

Jody Huff and Mrs. Gayla Hawkins of San Saba, announce the approaching marriage of their mother, Nan Gay Huff to Harlen D. Barker, both of San Saba. He is the father of Mrs. Dana McGuire of Irving and Leslie and Heath Barker of San Saba. Parents of Nan are Mr. and Mrs. Carl West of Temple. Parents of Harlen are Mr. and Mrs. Brantley Barker of San Saba.

The annual six-man coaching clinic and all-star games saw mixed results as far as Cherokee and Richland Springs were concerned. The East All-Star football team upset the West team 30-8. Cherokee's Lee Hicks had the privilege of breaking an 8-8 tie when he smashed over the goal line from one yard out. Terry Fritz of Harper booted the two extra points to give the East a 16-8 lead which they never relinquished.

Golding Motors, Inc. has announced the addition of Marlin Hunt to their sales force. Hunt comes to San Saba from Baton Rouge, Louisiana where he was employed at University Ford. In 1987 he was honored as "Salesman of the Year."

Willie Myers, head track coach and a football assistant at Rankin, will replace Sam Eoff as head football coach at Class A Rochelle this fall. Myers graduated from Rochelle High School in 1956. He became a football assistant at Rochelle in 1962 and then was head coach for three years. Eoff resigned to take a junior high coaching position at Stanton.

Chris Davenport and James McNeely have good reason to smile. They have just returned from San Angelo where they won first place in the second division in a golf tournament at the Brentwood Country Club. They shot an 83-79––162, which was six strokes better than the second place team.

A new doctor's clinic will be in operation in San Saba. A rotation of three Llano doctors from the Hoerster and Dennis Clinic will be for starters. Services offered will include: General Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Allergy Testing, and Cardiac Stress Testing.

73 Years Ago August 4, 1949

In appreciation of the patronage extended to them for the past thirteen years, Dooley's 5-10-and 25¢ store will go all out to make this anniversary jubilee one that will long be remembered in San Saba. At a cost of several thousand dollars, coupled with a lot of work and effort on the part of the owners of this store, a complete renovation job has been finished, making this one of the most attractive stores in the city.

Champion III, who arrived in San Saba direct from Gene Autry's Flying A ranch, was greeted by some 300 enthusiastic children. The horse arrived by trailer, and after the unloading process was completed, Champion III was saddled and ready for the attention of the children.

Ike Shapiro has returned home from an extended visit in New York where he bought new fall merchandise for the Leader Dry Goods store. Shapiro combined business with pleasure, and enjoyed a lot of sightseeing on his trip.

Approximately 150 employees on the construction crew for the Lone Star Gas Company are moving into San Saba this week. These men will lay the 14 miles of tap line, which connects the main line. The Colorado River between here and Lometa is the target of work at the present time, with the gas line being laid under the river bed.

Bill Hartley, who will receive his degree in physical education from Southwestern University at Georgetown, Texas, will go to Columbus, Texas, where he has been hired as athletic coach for the school there. Hartley played four years of football for the Armadillos and made an enviable record for his work in the backfield.

Frank Hendricks, who owns one of the large fruit orchards and melon patches in the county, reported the watermelon crop as practically nil. Hendricks has some 4500 fruit trees, and even though the peach crop will not be up to standard, he has some consolation in looking forward to one of the largest apple crops that he has had.
