This Sunday the Super Bowl will be played to determine the best of the National Football League. Cincinnati and Los Angeles will meet on the gridiron, and one team will come away as champions. It is hard to believe that they have been playing this for 56 (LVI) years. I was a teenager in high school when the first game was played.
Many people will be gathered around their televisions to watch this game. There will be Super Bowl parties where friends gather together to watch the title game and eat finger foods. It will be a day for celebrating.
This coming Sunday will be a day of celebrating. But I am not thinking of a football game but rather celebrating the rising of our Lord Jesus Christ from His tomb. There are some people who would not think of missing this game for any reason. But there are people who will forget to worship God on this day. The things of this world will one day be destroyed. Then there will not be a Super Bowl to be played, but we will spend somewhere for an eternity. Second Peter 3:10 informs us, “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.” (NASB) Not a pretty picture, is it?
Paul tells us in Philippians 2:9-11 “Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” I know this will happen.
Also, this Sunday many people will be talking about this game for a long time, whichever way it turns out. It may be a good tackle made, a completed pass, a call by the referees some did not agree with, but it will be talked about over and over.
Wouldn’t it be great if God’s creatures would spend time talking about Him? Things like how compassionate He is, or how forgiving, or loving, or patient. Wouldn’t it be great of we discussed Jesus’ crucifixion, death, resurrection and ascension into heaven? We can and we must. So, let’s make sure that the spiritual things in life take the number one priority on our lives. Let’s remember the greatness of our God on this day and every day after.
At the end of time, which do you think will be most important? Then let’s give God His due.
