Mrs. A. Stroble came in Monday to renew her subscription to The Star. We never have a bit of trouble with our widow subscribers. They always know when their subscription is due – we never have to send them a statement or remind them of it.
This area's first commercial black-eyed pea crop is being combined harvested in the Richland Springs area, with planters receiving an average of 6¢ a pound. The crop is being purchased by L. R. Barron & Company of Athens which is represented by J. E. Swindell.
Milton Harris, president of the San Saba Rotary Club, has been requested by the editor of Wheel of Fortune, Louis A. Le Laurin of San Antonio, where the Rotarian magazine is published to supply a picture of a local scene or some historical landmark typical of this section, to be used during the coming year on the front cover of the periodical.
Inflation hit coffee in San Saba this week and it's now 10¢ a cup served in cafes and drug stores. Some of the coffee customers drink as many as five or six cups a day so that increase in price will take a half dollar or more of their pocket change. Since the increase in price, some of the customers are curbing their appetites and are getting a little slower on the greeting –– "Let's go have a cup of coffee."
Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Whitley of Huntsville have moved to San Saba to make their home. He has rented the Taylor building on the north side of the square and will soon announce the opening of his new business.
Mrs. T. M. Sofge marketed a load of fine watermelons here Tuesday.
Farm to market roads on the Chappel route and Wallace Creek route are nearing completion and are ready for topping.
First bale of 1950 cotton in San Saba was brought in from the H. D. Chadwick farm on Wallace Creek, which is farmed by S. O. Till, and was ginned by W. T. Vogel & Son Tuesday. The bale weighed 570 pounds of lint with 870 pounds of seed and the Vogel gin ginned the first bale free.

Mr. and Mrs. Foy Gibson of Bend announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Clovia Lea, to Tommy Ketchum. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Ketchum of San Saba.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wells of Richland Springs visited Mrs. Odessa Barnett.
Mr. and Mrs. Donnie High of San Antonio came home one day last week.
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Gentry attended the parade Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. F. R. Rogers recently returned from a visit with their son and family, Mr. and Mrs. Rod Rogers and daughters, Julia, 16, and Diana, 14, at Montreal, Canada. During the 11-day visit with their children, the group spent some time at Lake Memphremogog, Canada.
Laurie Bailey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Bailey of Cherokee, was honored Saturday, Aug. 16, in observance of her third birthday with a party at their home.
Paula Stewart, manager, and Kay Scott, owner, of the new "Lady Bug" shop downtown San Saba greeted customers all day Saturday during their grand opening of the ladies' wear shop.
Allen was not a very successful hurricane around here, only bringing .22 points of moisture at the Jym Sloan gauge last Sunday evening and night, and we hear it did less damage than expected on the Texas coast. To get a rain seems something rougher than Allen has to come along.
