California Dreaming
Hello, my San Saba loves, and do not let the title of my column fool you, I still love San Saba, Texas and my wonderful home; I am just missing my California family who came to spend time with me last week. Yeah, mom’s brother, David and his wife, Suzanne, were so wonderful and we all had a great time. It was the first time I had met them and they had only seen pictures of me but were already in love with me.
You all know my mom is a goof ball; well, David is the other redhead in the family and he did not fall far from the goof ball tree either. Our house was filled with such laughter, funny stories about the two of them growing up, cats, dogs, going to the beach and neighbors…it was wonderful. As for me, my world was at its best because our Lani and Roy were here too for a visit, so I had all those people wanting to hug and kiss me, love on me and share food with me…it was magnificent!
I admit I have been California dreaming and flattening on the hardwoods waiting for them to walk through the back door again. Hey, do I realize David and Suzanne have a full life in California, jobs, friends and three wonderful sons…yep, I do but do you realize I am Herman darling dachshund and demon of drama, so I want them all to myself!
I do have to say one great thing about having guests is the added bonus of them bringing over lunch from Gage’s, wow! I was in barbecue paradise and it is a place I never find myself, ribs, turkey, brisket and so many willing loving hearts to share with me!
I told mom I do believe we need to do some traveling and California is first on my list. She smiled, and then asked how I planned to get there. She told me I would not be allowed to run the aisles on a plane greeting everyone and if we drove to California it would take five years to get there with my pee stops every five minutes. I suppose I best give this long distance relationship thing a bit more thought.
I learned a new word I absolutely love…taciturn. I adore the way it rolls off my tongue like a ball in the grass. Oh, and in case you think I only know the pronunciation, think again, as it has the opposite meaning of me: silent, withdrawn, introverted. Hey, perhaps that is why I am drawn to it. . . after all, opposites do attract.
The parentals are perfect examples…they are hardly two peas from the same pod and yet have made a wonderful home for me. Speaking of making homes, we have puppies all around us! There is a puppy next door trying to steal dad! He climbs the fence trying to give dad hugs! Yep, dad comes in smelling of him and let me tell you, I notice; boy do I ever notice! Furthermore, the dog across the street had puppies! We hear them and they sound so adorable.
I think I would have made cute puppies. What mom? Oh very funny! Mom just said the only puppies I would be allowed to populate San Saba with would be Play Doh puppies as they can be smushed up and put back in the can. I suppose the parentals made sure of that when they snipped the Sinatra out of me, huh?
Well, my San Saba loves, I best get on with my day before this column turns into an R-rated expose’. I hope you have an amazing week. I want to thank you for allowing me into your life, letting me into your home, your heart and for putting up with my silliness. You are very special to me and to my family. Mom’s brother, David, told dad he thought San Saba was the perfect place for the parentals to live out the rest of their lives. He said it makes a lot more sense than them staying in the Houston area even if they would be closer to family. I agree. I love San Saba and the people. Thank you for being!
