San Saba will take an official holiday Monday, July 4, with practically all business houses to be closed, according to Slim Cobern, Chamber of Commerce manager.

The initial step in developing a children's playground at the City Park was taken Tuesday when the first piece of playground equipment was installed in the park area north of the swimming pool. The equipment was donated by Buster Martin, owner of the White Auto Store, who also assisted in setting it up.

Mrs. Belle Martin, 87, of Mercury, was named Queen of the Old Settlers last Friday at the annual reunion held on the old Fair Park grounds north of town. Mrs. Martin was given the title after being adjudged the oldest native of the county in attendance at the reunion.

Reuben E. Senterfitt, former Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives, delivered the main address at the Old Settlers Reunion Friday, speaking just before the noon hour. Members of the San Saba school band provided music at intervals during the day.

About half of the eligible voters in the Cherokee Common School District went to the polls Saturday and voted overwhelmingly to change their school district. Votes cast totalled 96, with 85 voting for changing and 11 voting against. There are an estimated 200 eligible voters in the district.

Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Ramirez are the parents of Juanita, eight pounds and eight ounces, born to them June 22 in the San Saba Memorial Hospital.

The San Saba rodeo netted between $600 and $800 for its sponsors, the San Saba County Chamber of Commerce, according to an estimate by Slim Cobern, manager. About 5,000 paid admissions were counted for the three-night show. James Brock of Cameron was the cowboy earning the most money from the show, pocketing $308 in prize money. Tied in second place were Jack Saunders of Pearl and Max Horne of Coleman, who both won $176. J. L. Stewardson took top money of $112 in the San Saba county calf roping; and Margie Yates (Mrs. Mack Yates Jr.) edged out other San Saba county cowboys for second place money of $74.67.

Boat owners heading out to the Highland Lakes and Colorado River downstream for the Fourth of July weekend need to make sure that there is a life jacket to fit every passenger - even in boats under 16 feet long. Lower Colorado River Authority Rangers remind boaters that life jackets are no longer a matter of choice; they are required by federal law that applies to al U.S. waterways as of May 1.

University of Texas pitcher Jon David Smart was selected in the fourth round of the major league draft by the Montreal Expos. Jon David, son of David and Marsha Behrens Smart and grandson of Juna Gray Oliver and Arnold C. Behrens, began his pitching career as an 8 year old in the San Saba Little League.

Andrea Gerber, daughter of Lynn and Maria Anita Gerber and granddaughter of Cuca Martinez, has received a multicultural award from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.

Mr. and Mrs. Abram (Abe) Martinez will be honored with a 50th wedding anniversary reception, hosted by their children at the new Mill Pond Park Pavilion. Abram Martinez and Mary Lena Flores were married June 30, 1945, in Mills County. Mary and Abe have lived in San Saba all their lives.

LCRA gave a check for $500 to help support Meals on Wheels and challenged San Saba residents to match their contribution. Modern Way Grocery responded to the challenge when Larry Don Bourke, owner, presented a check for $100 to Sharon Jennings for Meals on Wheels.
