Local athletes honored with revival of All-West Texas track & field team

Honoring the best high school athletes in the San Angelo Standard-Times' coverage area

Track Athlete of the Year – Brighton Adams, San Saba

The senior repeated as Class 2A state champion in the 800 meters after winning it as a sophomore before COVID-19 canceled the 2020 season. She also won state silver in the 400. Her personal-best in the 800 was 2 minutes, 17.83 seconds while her PR in the 400 (58.65) was the top time on the West Texas Bests track and field performance list for Class 3A and smaller schools in the Standard-Times coverage area. The two-time all-state selection in basketball will continue that sport next year, playing for Angelo State University.

All-West Texas Medalists: GIRLS

• Courtnee Cash, San Saba: The senior placed in four events at the Region IV-2A meet and was among the area leaders in the long jump (17-3), the triple jump (35-9), the 100 (12.74) and the 200 (26.58).

• Abigail Medrano, Cherokee: The senior earned two bronze medals at the 1A state meet. She threw a personal best 37-4 ¾ in the shot put, which ended up being the top mark on the West Texas Bests, and her earlier mark in the discus of 124-10 was second best.

BOYS

• Tristian Arkansas, Cherokee: The senior who will play football for Cisco Junior College won the 1A state championship in the 110 hurdles after finishing sixth in the event as a sophomore in 2019. His 14.76 was the West Texas Best.

• Joey Bond, Cherokee: The sophomore won gold in the shot put and silver in the discus throw at the 1A state meet. His best shot put of 50-1 ¾ and his discuSs throw of 160-10 were both third best in the area.

• Jadeyn Bryant, Richland Springs: The junior qualified to the 1A state meet in two events. He won silver in the 300 hurdles in a time of 40.02, the second best in the area. He also ran on the Coyotes’ 4x400 relay, which won bronze and ran a West Texas Best 40.88.

• Zane Capps, Richland Springs: The junior qualified to the 1A state meet in three events. He was third in the 100 with a West Texas Best time of 10.81. He was also fifth in the long jump and finished with a PR of 20-6. He was anchor on the Coyotes’ bronze-medal winning 4x100 relay which ran a West Texas Best 40.88.

• Richland Springs 4x100 relay: The foursome of junior Jadeyn Bryant, junior Nick Nilson, senior Landon Burkhart and junior Zane Capps clocked a West Texas Best time of 44.08 and won bronze at the 1A state meet.

• San Saba 4x200 relay: The foursome of senior Justin Yarbrough, junior Wesley Lackey, senior Stone Sears and senior Logan Glover finished ninth at the 2A state meet. Their seasonbest time of 1:31.55 was the West Texas Best.

• Stone Sears, San Saba: The senior led the area with a long jump of 22-0 ¾ and finished sixth at Region IV-2A in addition to running on the Armadillo’s statequalifying 4x200 relay.
