Dillos Varsity Baseball cruises to second win of 2021 Season

The San Saba High School varsity baseball team notched its second win of the year on Tuesday, April 6, as the Dillos went on the road and defeated District 29-2A foe Junction High School.

San Saba Dillos 9, Junction Eagles 1

In the 9-1 victory over the Eagles, the Dillos used superb pitching by Reagan Mejia and steady offensive support throughout the night for an easy win. In 7.0 innings pitched, Mejia struck out a whopping 11 batters while allowing just three hits and one run.

On offense, San Saba got things going when Hayden Reeves smacked a two-run double in the bottom of the first inning to give the Dillos a quick 2-0 lead. After the Dillos scored one run in each of the next three innings, San Saba broke the game open in the top of the sixth inning with three runs.

Risien Shahan had two separate RBI singles on the night, while Andrew Graham also drove in a run back in the third inning to help pad the Dillo lead. Logan Glover showed solid discipline at the plate on the night and was also able to draw a bases-loaded walk in the top of the seventh inning to extend San Saba’s lead to 9-0.

San Saba Dillos 4, Harper Longhorns 10

Unfortunately for the Dillos, a red-hot Harper team came to San Saba on April 9 and was able to knock them off by a score of 10-4.

The Dillos managed to show signs of life and put up a good fight against a great team. With San Saba already down 4-0 in the bottom of the first inning, the Dillos cut the Longhorns’ lead to just 4-2 on a bases-loaded walk by Reeves and a fly ball by Graham that resulted in a Harper error. In the loss to the Longhorns, Wesley Lackey scored two runs for the Dillos while Mejia and Shahan each scored once.

Against a very good Harper offense, Glover pitched 4.0 innings with three strikeouts while allowing seven runs on five hits.

Up next for the Dillos varsity baseball squad, San Saba will have two district games this week: 5 p.m. at home on April 13 vs. Center Point High School and 5 p.m. on April 16 on the road at Johnson City High School.

Also in action the past week was the Lady Dillos varsity softball squad, which unfortunately came up short in both games with a 10-3 road defeat to Center Point and a lopsided 18-1 home loss at the hands of Johnson City. The Lady Dillos will have two more tough District 28-2A games this week: 6:30 p.m. on April 13 hosting Harper and 6:30 p.m. on April 16 away at rival Mason High School.
