A Word from Wayne

It’s a great day to be a Dillo! A big question lately is “When are we going back to school?” It is a question asked by parents and students…… a lot. Truth is, we are still in school just doing it a different way.

It has only been two weeks since we began our “closed but instructing,” schedule. I know for many the change has been challenging, but so far, so good.

The number of disciplinary referrals is at an all-time low on our campuses and it is probably a good thing that parents at home are not keeping records. We do not know when schools will reopen and return to face to face instruction.

The Governor shut us down and it will have to be the Governor that reopens us. The Governor may have a date in mind and the President may say something else. My hope is that we will be in session by the 1st of May but that is only hope at this point. Anything earlier than that would be a bonus.

Our goal at San Saba ISD is to continue in excellence, no matter the delivery system. A good teacher can teach anything, anyway to anybody. That’s what we do.

All kids are different. They learn different and not all teachers are the same. The point being, we learn how to learn, and teachers must learn how to teach each individual and what works best for them.

Several years ago, I bought six weeks of dance lessons as a Valentine’s gift for my wife. It was something she had always wanted us to do. We had been married over thirty years and we did not know how to two-step. Disco had left us with no dance skills at all. My wife was more excited than I was when we showed up for our lessons. There were about 10 couples and some singles. It was terrible. They made us dance with other people! It was awkward. I stepped on strangers’ toes. The ladies would change places with each other so they would not have to dance with me when it came my turn. Some people made it look so easy and for me it was like dancing with the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz.

Education is like dance lessons. You need someone who knows what they are doing to show you the steps. You need patience when your toes are stepped on. At some point you find a rhythm. The steps become muscle memory. You learn to lead or follow. The entire dance floor moves from chaos to a flow. What was clumsy and awkward now moves in sync and becomes a beautiful thing.

Our current situation is a new dance for everybody. It is awkward and clumsy but with practice, it will flow and even become enjoyable. Let’s dance. Go Dillos!!!
