Coyotes Knock Off Top-Ranked Cherokee in District Opener, 76-52

The Richland Springs Coyotes made a statement Friday night, taking down the state’s top-ranked Cherokee Indians in a 76-52 victory to open District 8 play. The matchup featured two of the top teams in Class A Division II six-man football, with No. 4 Richland Springs handing No. 1 Cherokee its first defeat of the season.

The win improved the Coyotes’ overall record to 6-1 and gave them a 1-0 start in district competition, while Cherokee dropped to 6-1 overall and 0-1 in district play.

Richland Springs wasted little time establishing control of the contest, putting 32 points on the scoreboard in the opening quarter to take a 32-18 advantage. The Coyotes continued their offensive success in the second period, extending their lead to 48-24 at halftime. By the end of the third quarter, Richland Springs had built a commanding 64-32 lead before securing the 76-52 victory.

The Coyotes were led offensively by an outstanding performance from Layne Ward, who accounted for 230 rushing yards and five touchdowns on the ground. Ward also threw for 148 yards and three touchdowns while adding five receptions for 92 yards and another score.

Evan Deeds delivered an equally impressive all-around performance, contributing in multiple phases of the offense. Deeds completed passes for 144 yards and a touchdown, rushed for 51 yards and another score, and hauled in three receptions for 148 yards, with all three catches resulting in touchdowns.

Several other Coyotes contributed to the team’s offensive production. Brice Roesler recorded two receptions for 68 yards while adding 16 rushing yards. Christian McKinnerney contributed 16 yards rushing, and Ian McKinnerney added another 14 yards on the ground.

On the defensive side of the ball, Richland Springs received strong performances from several players who helped contain the Cherokee offense. Deeds led the defensive effort with 15 tackles, two interceptions, and a fumble recovery.

Roesler followed with 14 tackles, while Ward contributed 11 and Edgar Flores added eight. AJ Rosales and Ian McKinnerney each finished with seven tackles, while Christian McKinnerney and Matthew Woerndell recorded four apiece. Hunter Stewart rounded out the defensive statistics with one tackle.

The victory was a significant early step in district competition for the Coyotes, who combined an explosive offensive performance with several key defensive stops to defeat the previously unbeaten Indians.

Richland Springs will look to carry that momentum into its next district matchup when the Coyotes return home to host the Brookesmith Mustangs. Brookesmith enters the contest with a 5-2 overall record and an 0-1 district mark after falling to Rochelle, 71-38. Rochelle improved to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in district competition with that victory.

With their district-opening win behind them, the Coyotes will turn their attention to another important matchup as they continue their pursuit of a district championship.
