70 Years Ago October 4, 1956
Cindy Daniel, newly crowned Homecoming Queen for San Saba, performed her first chore even before getting her ride around the football field. Cindy drew a name to see who would get the game ball. The winner was Dee Kilpatrick. The festivities were dampened a bit as the Armadillos lost 34-0.
San Saba Elementary students watched as two of their classmates hoisted the American Flag on a new flagpole that was recently presented to the school by Joe Allen Robertson, SSISD school board member. Mrs. Louise Oswald, principal, stood with teachers and students from all of the Elementary classes. After the pledge of allegiance they sang America the Beautiful. San Saba Parent-Teachers Association (PTA) officers had their regular meeting. Officers present were Anita Gomez, vicepresident; Maxine Polaski, president; Janie Menchaca, treasurer; Shirley Harrell, historian; Patsy Duncan, membership chairman; Gracie Ramon, secretary; and Ted Hubert, program chairman. Unable to be present wereAubrey Hillman, parliamentarian and Shirley Broussard, reporter.
Miss Kim Mask, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Malcom Mask, was named the Football Sweetheart at Richland Springs. She was escorted by Jody Lewis, son of Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Lewis. Miss Mask has been a twirler for three years, is now head twirler and she is active in sports, FHA and 4-H Clubs.
50 Years Ago October 7, 1976
Mrs. V. C. Tyler attended a pink and blue shower honoring Mrs. Sonny Wood at the home of Mrs. Jack Smithhart last Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. Norman Hardy of Houston and their son, Freddie, who is a member of the Coast Guard, spent the weekend in the home of their son, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hardy and Darby. Freddie Hardy is to leave soon for Hawaii where he will be stationed.
The children of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel M. Everett honored them with open house held at the Everett home Sept. 22 in observance of the couple's 50th wedding anniversary.
Mr. and Mrs. John Wilton are attending Southwest Texas State College at San Marcos. Wilton is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Will Wilton of Richland Springs and his wife is the former Lonette Taff, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lon Taff of San Saba.
Dr. W. S. Pence and Mark O. Patton returned recently from a hunting trip to Wyoming, with each having bagged a black tailed deer. The men spent ten days on the trip, and hunted about 90 miles west of Laramie. Dr. Pence's deer was a 10-pointer and weighed 190 pounds, while Patton's had six points and weighed about 185 pounds.
