Cherokee ISD News

It’s been another great week here at Cherokee ISD! The kindergarten classroom had a very special visit from two of our football players, Uriah Valdez, and Jaxon White. They came to share some jokes from a joke book. The students had so much fun listening to their jokes and spending time with these special guests. To make the visit even more fun, they joined the kindergartners for their end-of-the-day dance party. The students absolutely loved having them join in. It was a wonderful way the end the day with lots of laughter, smiles, and dancing. Mrs. Johnson and the kindergarten class are so thankful for the fun memories they helped to create!

We also got a special message from our friend Jesse with Exploring by the Seat of Your Pants. Exploring by the Seat of Your Pants is a virtual education program that connects K-12 classrooms with scientists, explorers, and conservationists via live video broadcasts and virtual field trips. Here at Cherokee, we have participated in these events for several years. Right now, they are working on a project with Gros Morne in Newfoundland. They do remote helicopter flights into the bush to replant forests lost in the heart of the very wild national park, and Jesse has an agreement with the park to get little tags with the names of some of the participating classrooms on the trees they are planting. The idea is to make it sort of their tree. The Parks Canada team has made up the tags which are done on birchbark and will biodegrade. Our school has earned a tag! Jesse is hoping to be able to fly out with the team and shoot some short films with the trees as they are being planted and he would like to give each class a shout out. We will stay tuned to find out if it all goes according to plan, but we definitely have a tag.

In sports news, our varsity team had a scrimmage in Covington last week. This week will be the first game of the season as our Indians travel to Leakey for a Thursday night game at 7 p.m.. Originally there was a JV game scheduled in Leakey also but it has been cancelled, so please make note of that change and the earlier start time for the varsity game. We are also going to have a 10u flag football team for Cherokee this year. Games will be on Saturdays starting in September. More info to come!

Let’s have another fantastic week, y’all!
