Thomas Sloan has the contract to kill the mesquite on the Polk ranch. His son, Tom Alan and Albert Johanson began the exterminating job. This ranch has an immense quantity of good mesquite wood, which if available at a good market would bring remunerative prices.

Dr. George B. Marsh of Richland Springs was a business visitor here. Dr. Marsh is settling in our neighbor town, where a good young doctor is needed. He is a great-grandson of the late John T. Walters, early day attorney of this county.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Chamberlain are leaving for Lubbock. We regret exceedingly to lose these good people. Their departure will leave a gap in the order of affairs in the Sloan community that will be hard to fill.

Mrs. B. L. Howell and baby are home from the San Saba Hospital. Her mother, Mrs. Kerr of Ardmore, Okla., is here with her and is getting acquainted with her first grandchild.

Well, the old settlers reunion is in history and let us say here that it was a success. We were surprised on arrival to see our friend, Bill Hinyard, standing over a barbecue pit and the younger boys with their shirts wet with perspiration, but kept on going though the sun was coming down. Bill Smith, the Alcalde at the post office, addressed the crowd in his usual humorous manner and acted as chairman for the election of officers for next year. We noted that Mr. E. M. Scott was busy hauling water to keep the dust from clogging up the throats of the visitors.

Phil A. Chrane is among the more than 300 candidates for degrees to be awarded by Southwest Texas State College during summer commencement. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Chrane, Chrane is a candidate for a bachelor of science degree in education, receiving his degree in the field of mathematics.

San Saba Volunteer firemen were called to the Laundromat where clothes in one of the dryers were burning. Jesse Miles, a fireman at the fire, said that the fire caught inside the dryer from the clothes which probably contained some rubber. No garments or rugs containing rubber should be placed in dryers, the fireman said. The fire was kept inside the dryer and firemen quenched it without causing any water damage and little smoke damage to the building. The dryer was ruined and the clothes in the dryer burned to ashes, Miles said.
