The Elm Grove Annual Youth Rodeo was a fun way to wrap up the summer, and my family was glad to be there enjoying the evening. There is just something special about a small-town rodeo. You see familiar faces, visit with friends you may not have seen much over the summer, and watch the younger generation enjoy traditions that have been part of our communities for years.
My youngest grandchild, Warren, especially loved the Goat Scramble. At only four years old, he was completely caught up in the excitement of it all. Watching the little ones run, laugh, and do their best to catch a goat is always one of those moments that brings a smile to everyone in the stands. Ribbons were handed out and you would have thought Warren had won the biggest prize of the night, that smile!
Events like the Elm Grove Youth Rodeo are about much more than competition. They are about families coming together, children making memories, and our community supporting one another. (Oh, and the HAMBURGERS, iykyk) Now, with summer quickly coming to an end, it is time for another big event — the start of a new school year at Richland Springs ISD.
The start of a new school year is always a little bittersweet for me. Having spent years as both a teacher and a principal, I always loved those first days of school—the smiling faces coming through the doors, the excitement of a fresh beginning, and the anticipation of all the achievements and successes still to come. One of the greatest gifts of working in education was watching children grow over the years. You might teach a child in second grade, watch them move through each season of life, and then one day proudly watch them walk across the stage at graduation. If you are fortunate enough to stay in a community long enough, you may even find yourself teaching the children of former students. Those full-circle moments are hard to describe, but they are some of the sweetest memories a school career can give you.
I want to wish all the students, teachers, administrators, coaches, staff members, and families a wonderful school year.
