San Saba once again hosted the Diamond Youth Baseball and Softball Region 3 District 8 8U Softball Championship Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, May 2-3. With 11 total teams entered from Mason, Brady, Menard, Junction, Llano, and San Saba, the fields were packed with athletes and fans. For the second year in a row, San Saba (White) brought home the championship title, winning their last game against Llano (Hoskins) 15-5! This group of girls worked tirelessly on and off the field to improve and fine tune their skills throughout their 8U careers and it has shown. Winning a championship is difficult to do, and winning it twice is even harder. This team's hard work also boasts an impressive undefeated season where they outscored their opponents 161-16! Those numbers show that not only can the girls make contact with the ball on offense, but they also worked hard to quickly and accurately field the ball on defense, often making plays and outs from third to first and shortstop to first.
Throughout the tournament, opposing coaches awarded MVP medals to the athletes and in the championship game against Llano (Hoskins), the Llano coaches awarded Gentry Bohannon a well deserved MVP medal. Gentry primarily played catcher and earned the team 3 outs by catching foul fly balls. She also is known to send the ball to the outfield consistently while at bat. Other players awarded MVP throughout the weekend were Morgan Huff, Abby Rivera, and Paxley Weeks. These girls and their team are a special group that look to make waves next year when they enter the 10U division.
