We were sitting in the living room, when suddenly it happened; the lights went out.
My wife and I found ourselves in total darkness. We talked about what to do; she would get the matches if I would light the candle on the living room mantle. After I lit the candle, I sat there watching the little flame from the candle realizing it was the only light in our house.
It reminded me of something in the Bible.
Jesus said He was the light of the world.
John 8:12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
John 9:5 “As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
Jesus was not talking about candlelight or light from a light bulb, He was talking about spiritual light, understanding the things of God.
He also went on to say that man is in darkness.
John 1:5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
The Bible promises that if we let the light into our lives (Jesus as Lord and Savior of our life), we will become Children of God.
John 1:9-11 The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.
John 12:36 “While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.”
It was so quiet and peaceful with all the power off and the one little candle giving off its light (it gave me a great sense of peace and security).
It reminds me of what is available to everyone who accepts Jesus.
John 12:44-46 And Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me. 45 And whoever sees me sees him who sent me. 46 I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.
It was a little scary until we lit the candle; life can be the same way if we don’t have Christ in our lives.
Let us let the light of God into our lives today and get out of the darkness.
See you in Church next Sunday.
