50 Years Ago January 30, 1975

Mr. and Mrs. Jim Bob Grumbles, Judy and Jody, visited her mother, Mrs. Lillie Smith enroute to their new home in Mexico City. Mrs. Smith accompanied them to San Marcos for a visit with Mr. and Mrs. Roy Lee Smith and family.

San Saba volunteer fire fighters answered a call to a grass fire at the Gene Conner Ranch. No major damage was done but the fire did get close to the Conner home. Efforts were being made to burn out an irrigation ditch when it temporarily got out of hand.

Kevin Marley, Southwest Texas State University student, was among those named to the Dean’s Honor List last semester. We are proud of you Kevin. He is majoring in business administration.

Mrs. R. P. Pafford is visiting in Gatesville with her son and family, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Pafford and helping care for their new son, Richard Jeremy.

Vandals, believed to be using a hammer, smashed the glasses out of six parking meters late at night according to a report by “Boots” Sheppard, meter attendant. “Glasses were broken on both sides,” reported Sheppard. “They had to be hit hard because just tapping would not break the glass.”

30 Years Ago January 26, 1995

Roddy and Barbara Maddox helped Vann and Polly Maddox celebrate their wedding anniversary. They enjoyed eating out and a basketball game in Goldthwaite. Vann and Polly’s granddaughter, Ricci, Grimes, was playing.

Donald Sloan caught a 25-pound yellowcat Jan. 20 in the San Saba River using perch for bait.

If you have driven by the Mill Pond this week you have probably noticed that the water is low, and is not flowing over the dam. No, the pond is not leaking! It is being drained to allow construction of a fishing pier and boat launch.

A News 36 School Weather Station was installed recently at San Saba High School. Made possible through a grant from Motorola, this will be a valuable learning tool for students as well as an aide for News 36 weather reports.

Lois Lane and Rosetta Garrett enjoyed lunch at the Senior Citizens and got to see the exhibits of the County Livestock Show.

Two San Saba student at Angelo State University received degrees during the fall commencement at the University. Steven Ray Bauer, son of Coach and Mrs. Lendon Bauer of San Saba, received a Bachelor of Business Administration, with a major in Marketing. Traci McGehee, daughter of Roger and Glenda McGehee, received a Bachelor of Science, with a major in Special Learning and Development.
