80 Years Ago September 21, 1944
Glenn Trotter of San Saba has been at John Tarleton for three tri-mesters. He was an engineering major and a member of the band. He was a staff sergeant in the cadet corps. He is returning home to await his call to the Air Corps.
Since the recent rains the horn or straw flies are the worst we have seen on stock; they can’t graze for fighting flies. They cluster on thin places on the bovine tribe and suck till it becomes raw and then the worms get in, so the stockman has plenty trouble.
Mrs. H. B. Fields of Dallas, was a visitor in San Saba and she recalled that she had not been in San Saba for 47 years. She moved from here when she was 5 years of age and was Ella Mae Simmons, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Simmons.
Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Foster and sons have moved here and Mr. Foster has accepted the position as manager of the Palace Theater. He has been the manager of the Palace and Tex Theaters in Burkburnet for the past two years.
Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Gosch took their daughter, Gloria, to Waco where she enrolled at Baylor University. She was graduated from the San Saba high school in May and she will stay at the Katherine Alexander Hall.
60 Years Ago September 17, 1964
Mrs. J. L. Dailey, 88, who has lived next door to the San Saba school for 53 years, “thinks young” and keeps young in spirit by her associations with children. She believes the best in them, and gets the best. There’s just a few feet of space and a cyclone fence between her kitchen window and the playgrounds. Often a child on seeing her at the window blows her a kiss.
It’s harder now than it’s ever been to get change of a dollar in San Saba county. The coin shortage, which has reached serious proportions in many parts of the country, is causing some problems locally. Retailers are having difficulty in keeping enough coins on had for their normal business needs. Vending machines, parking meters, pay telephones and public transportation facilities are all affected by it.
The San Saba Jr. High Armadillos split games with the Copperas Cove Junior High teams in their season opener. The Eighth Grade Dillos won their opener, 20-0, but the Seventh Graders lost to Copperas Cove Seventh Grade, 8-16.
Mr. and Mrs. T. K. Dismuke went to San Angelo to assist their daughter, Sherry, in moving into the dorm at San Angelo College where she begins her freshman year.
The Richland Springs School band members recently elected officers for the year, naming Patty Pearce as president. Other officers include Edith Barina, vice-president; Susan Wilton, secretary-treasurer; Beverly Wilton, reporter; Deloris Harvey and Elaine Barina, librarians. Miss Pearce is drum major and Cathy Land and Susan Wilton are majorettes. Johnnie Marie Smith and Deloris Harvey are flag bearers. Cheerleaders elected included James Stuart, H. M. Burleson, Barbara Connel and Cynthia Hardman. George Smith is the band director.
