    For many years the SSHS Dilloettes were scheduled into the school day with the band. One did not have to play an instrument if she was a Dilloette. In 1976, the band director, Mr. Dwayne Bishop, asked all the members to learn to play an instrument. Some were reluctant learners, but all the Dilloettes learned to play instruments and march with the band. Until 1998, the Dilloettes were part of the band in every way except for when they marched forward to perform their routine.

    Since then, the drill team has sometimes existed alone, and in other years they have been part of the band. San Saba has managed to maintain award-winning organizations in both the SSHS Band and the SSHS Drill Team.

    In the past, drill team members were required to attend a summer camp for training at their own expense. Camps were held around the state, and the SSHS Dilloettes attended various camps, including camps at Southern Methodist University (SMU), Tarleton University, Angelo State University (ASU), and Stephen F. Austin (SFA) in Nacodoches. Competitions were held at these camps, and individual awards were also given.

    On October 30, 1994, the Dilloettes entered a competition in Dallas with part of the prize being the opportunity to perform at halftime of a Dallas Cowboys game. The Dilloettes performed to perfection and won the opportunity to perform at half time of a Cowboys game in Dallas.

    The same year, Shele Sanderson, Michelle Menchaca, and Stephanie Ellis were named “All American” dancers at summer camp and were invited to perform in the Peach Bowl Parade and at half-time of the game. The Peach Bowl was played on New Year’s Day, 1995, in Atlanta, Georgia. Mississippi State, coached by Jackie Sherrill, played against North Carolina State, coached by Mike O’Cain. North Carolina State won the game, 28 to 24, and three of our own SSHS Dilloettes performed on the field at half time.

    The Dilloettes continued to set a high standard and won the competition in Dallas and performed at half time of a Dallas Cowboys game in 1995, 1997, and 2000.

    The Dilloettes have a long tradition of performing award-winning performances at half time of the San Saba Armadillo football games. Be sure to come watch the Homecoming game, the SSHS Award-Winning Band, and the Dilloettes on September 13, 2024. The Dilloettes will be celebrating their 65 Anniversary, and Alumni will be honored at the game. The following day, September 14, 2024, there will be a brunch for Dilloette Alumni, current Dilloettes, and all Dilloette sponsors held in the beautiful home of former Dilloette, Martha Leigh Miller Whitten from 10:00 a.m. until noon.
