Down Memory Lane

60 Years Ago August 6, 1964

Mrs. Jack Carroll, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. McGregor of Richland Springs, was a member of the 1964 graduating class of Hendrick Hospital School of Nursing in Abilene. This is the 40th class to be graduated from the school.

In copying the San Saba County Cattle Brands of the 1800’s, in which there were over seventeen hundred registered from 1856 through 1899, we found the first brand registered in 1856 was the Half Circle A, belonging to S. A. Houston of the Bend community. We hope to have all these brands on display in the San Saba County Museum.

John Baskin, head coach at Hico, was named head football coach for San Saba High School at a special meeting of the San Saba Board of Education, Supt. J. C. Petty as announced. Baskin was head coach at Hico the past year and previous to his position there he served as assistant coach at De Leon for four years.

We would like to urge everyone in our community owning antiques to take them to the San Saba Museum located in the county courthouse. You may enter them as a loan or as a gift. Let us try to help our County Historical Society make a success of this museum.

San Saba winners of the Midget Division 400” Freestyle Relay Team at the third annual Burnet Splash Day are Ricky Hyatt, Sam Murray, Henry Harrison and Keith Sterner. A San Saba team including David Parker, John McRorey, Chan Priest and Lane Bowen also won first place in Senior Freestyle Relay.

San Saba girls won the Intermediate Girl’s Division Freestyle Relay Tea at the Burnet Splash Day. The team included Marsha Behrens, Betty Murray, Jan Sloan and Gay Priest. The San Saba team was coached by Buddy Priest and Judy Hector.

50 Years Ago August 8, 1974

Mr. and Mrs. Danny W. Shaw are the parents of a son, Dwayne Milan, born July 27 in San Saba Memorial Hospital. He weighed nine pounds, four ounces. The mother is the former Amy Johnson.

Marilyn Brister, the senior 4-H club member representing San Saba County, participated in the District 7 4-H Dress Revue. Marilyn is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jackie Brister and was the county winner. Susie Reynolds, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Travis Reynolds of Richland Springs, represented the junior 4-H girls. Both girls scored high and received ribbon awards. Marilyn received second place award and Susie received a third place award.

Larry’s No. 2 put it all together––a undefeated season and trophies for winning the 11-12 year old bracket of the San Saba Little League Championship. The team included Larry Sanderson, Joe Gamboa, Gonzalo Flores, Kenneth Golding, Joe Henry Ramirez, Moses Cisneroz, Jeffrey Crim, Johnnie Shahan and coaches Larry Sanderson and Bo Phillips.

Lance Perry spent a few days at Buchanan Lake with his grandmother, Mrs. L. O. Johnson, after he celebrated his birthday with a number of friends helping him celebrate.

August 3 between 12:30 and 1:20 a.m. the plate glass window was broken at Larry’s No. 2 on the Goldthwaite highway. Two cases of beer were taken. Officers continued the investigation.
