We use many different words to describe Gods attributes. We say that God is Omniscient, meaning that he knows everything that is, or can be known. There is nothing he does not know. We also speak of Gods Omnipotence, referring to his Almighty power. This speaks of his limitless ability to do everything and anything he chooses to do. There is nothing that God cannot do. And then, we talk of Gods Omnipresence, meaning his power to be in all places at all times. He is in the past, present and future right now, seeing and knowing all things that were, that are and that will be. That’s hard for us to comprehend. Isaiah 57:15
speaks of his omnipresence when it says, “For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I will dwell in the high and holy place..”
In today’s article as space permits, I want to look at these three attributes of God as found in Psalm 139. I encourage you to read it for yourself.
In verses 1-6 we find the Omniscience of God. v.1 He searched me and knows me; he knows when I sit down and when I get up. v.2 He knows my thoughts before I have them. v.3 He knows my thoughts through the day and when I lie down at night. v.3 He knows the way I take daily, and all I do, good or bad. v.4 He knows every word on my tongue before it’s spoken. He understands it’s motives and it’s meaning. He knows it all together, or, all there is to know about it. v.5 He knows my past and my future, and guides me with his hand. v.6 His knowledge is far above our comprehension.
Verses 7-12 speak of Gods Omnipresence. v.7 You can never go anywhere that he doesn’t know where you are. “Whither shall I flee from thy presence?” v.8 If you go to heaven or hell, behold, he is there. v.9 You can’t get up early enough or dive deep enough to escape his presence. v.10 His hand can still reach exactly where you are and bring you up and out. v.11 There is no darkness dark enough because “In him is no darkness at all.” v.12 Where he is, it is always light. The darkness and the light are both alike to him.
Verses 13-16 speak of his Omnipotence. These verses cover his power to create life in all its intricacies, and his wisdom and presence in every individual case. He takes personal interest. Psalm 139:15, 16 “My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.”
What a God!!!
