Bill Grusendorf honored at recent Waco High Football game

    Waco ISD honored the last Waco High team to win a state championship during their recent game against Shoemaker. The highlight of the night from a Waco High perspective came at halftime. That’s when Waco ISD honored two of the last remaining members of the 1948 Waco High Tiger team, in recognition of the 75th anniversary of their state championship season.

    The crowd serenaded Floyd Miller and Bill Grusendorf with a warm ovation. Miller and Grusendorf played for that Waco High team that went 14-0 on the season and defeated Amarillo, 21-0, for the title.

    After the ceremony, Waco ISD athletic director Ed Love thanked the men for coming and told them to take care of themselves.

    “You know what Mickey Mantle said, don’t you?” said Miller, 92, laughing. “He said, “If I would have known I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself.”
