We have some wonderful news to share! Last week, we announced that San Saba County Friends of Animals planned to cease all operations as of December 31st of this year. The organization’s long-time president had announced her retirement as of the end of 2023, and we had not found anyone who was willing and able to take over leadership of our group going forward.
The response from our community was incredible. Many people reached out to us, mostly to express thanks for the hard work we’ve done over the past 11 years and to let us know how sorry they were that we would no longer be able to provide muchneeded services to companion animals in San Saba County.
Among the people who contacted us was a couple who have volunteered with us in the past and have also done quite a bit of rescue work independent of our group. They were interested in continuing, on a limited basis, our trap/neuter/return program (TNR) for community cats. After a few conversations, they decided that they wanted not only to continue TNR but also gradually to restart the other programs our group has offered (adoption and rescue, low-cost spay/neuter assistance, and pet assistance). So, it is looking very likely that San Saba County Friends of Animals will continue after all!
We still have a few things to work out and need to get some board approvals in place. The transition to new leadership will happen early in 2024. For the remainder of this year, we will operate as we announced last week. Intake will remain closed until sometime next year. For anyone who signed up for TNR and/or low-cost spay/neuter assistance as of October 25th, we will do our very best to help prior to the end of 2023. We will still add names to both lists; however, we do not know whether we will be able to help before these programs restart at some point next year. We will also continue to post lost and found animals and provide help under our pet assistance program as best we can through December 31, 2023.
We will provide more information in the next few weeks. If you are interested in volunteering with our group, please contact us by sending a message to our Facebook page (www.facebook. com/SanSabaCountyFriendsof-Animals) or by leaving a voice mail message on our “pet line” (325-372-7387). Thank you for supporting our rescue mission!
