October is Fire Prevention Month,. Volunteers with the County Volunteer Fire Departments visited area schools to teach fire safety and let students inspect the equipment firefighters use.
Students learned to check smoke detectors in their homes this month to ensure they are in working order; to work with their family to make an escape plan in case of a fire; and to be sure any fire extinguishers are in working order.
Students also learned about firefighting equipment and gear, and had the opportunity to try on the heavy (and hot) clothing firefighters wear to protect them during fires. They also were able to tour the fire trucks, and San Saba Elementary students learned about swift water rescues that the San Saba VFD conducts.
It's Not Too Late To Donate!
In the October 5th edition of the San Saba News & Star, an open letter to the community described a matching donation program to raise money for a new fire truck for the San Saba Volunteer Fire Department. The Community Foundation of San Saba County, with the help of an anonymous donor, is matching any donations made toward this effort dollar-for-dollar, so you can double the impact of your donation, no matter how small.
The program deadline is October 31st, so please help out if you can.
