The regularly scheduled weekly luncheon meeting of the San Saba Rotary was held on Thursday, September 14th, at Pepperbelly's, Marcus Woods presiding. Ten members were present.
Business discussed: (1)the December 5th Christmas party and menu to be celebrated together with Brady Rotary; (2) SS ISD art department to design T-shirts for sale for the April 8th Total Solar Eclipse and to enlist local vendors whose sales of the shirts will help to fund spring Rotary scholarships for SS County high school students and to provide funding for the SSISD art department and purchase of supplies; and finally (3) a reminder regarding scheduled Rotary highway litter clean up roadside adoption for Saturday, September 16th.
Randall Robinson, San Saba District Attorney, briefly commented on Texas Senate Bill 22 passed this year by the Texas Legislature which provides for grants to (1) Sheriff offices, (2) constables, and (3) prosecutors‘ offices of rural Texas counties. The intent of the Bill is to raise salaries among grant recipient offices so that Sheriffs and Sheriff offices, Constables, and County District Attorneys can stabilize salaries and maintain or keep trained officers, constables, and prosecutors. Currently, it is difficult as many individuals are trained and occupy various law enforcement positions but because of low local salaries, leave and move to urban positions for higher paying salaries, a sad situation which doesn’t contribute to stability in county offices and law enforcement!
Saturday Litter Cleanup (West US 190 Hwy toward Brady) SS Rotary members who walked and collected litter were: Tom Griess, committee chair; and Beth Griess, (both of Lometa); Marcus Woods, Paula Woods, and their daughter, (SS); Marvin Whitt (Cherokee); Randy Robinson, (SS); Anne Vincent (Lometa); Cydney Pearce (RS); and James Buck Gilcrease, (SS). They all raced the rain which began at 9:00 a.m. as the Rotarians almost totally cleaned both 190 roadsides from Tractor Supply to west past the Jordan Auction Barns.
