50 Years Ago September 20, 1973

The San Saba High School Pep Squad held a practice session to practice yells and also to establish an orderly march for entering and leaving the stands on Friday Night football games. Winners of the spirit trophy went to Debra, Brenda and Linda Bailey for showing the most spirit for the week. The 'Spirit Stick' was won by the Sophomore Class for showing the most spirit at the pep rally.

The children of Mr. and Mrs. Grant Bostick will host a reception in honor of their parents' golden wedding anniversary in the Bostick home. Their children are Edna Bostick of Austin and Calvin Bostick of Lampasas.

San Saba 4th and 5th grade 4-H members met for their first meeting of the year. The group met for organization and election of officers. Officers named were Kim McHorse, president; Renee Reynolds, vice-president; Karen Dawson, secretary; Lynn Oliver, council delegate; and Carol Ann Barrier, reporter.

Mr. and Mrs. Roger Verette have announced the birth of a son, Jason Brent. He was born Aug. 30 in San Saba Memorial Hospital and weighed six pounds, 10 ounces. Mrs. Verette is the former Sue Cummings. The couple has another son, Kevin, 5.

Rebecca Ann Wilson, daughter of Mrs. Thelma Wilson, was among 1,134 graduates receiving degrees from North Texas State University. Miss Wilson was awarded a master of education degree in counseling and student services.

Bob Spinks and students got a first look at the brand new School Bus for San Saba High School. It will seat 54 passengers and will be used on route No. 6 with Harvey Reeves driving. Also getting a good look at the bus are Donald Harrell, Edward Flores, Johnny Stewart, Armando Campos, Ronnie Crim. The bus was scheduled to arrive in time for school, but was tardy.

30 Years Ago September 23, 1993

The San Saba Armadillos accomplished three things in their game with the Early Longhorns last Friday night in Early: They won their first game of the season, got a shutout, and spoiled Early's homecoming festivities. The 35-0 win was a big morale booster for the Dillos, who proved that the toughness they displayed in their loss to Brady was no fluke.

Mr. and Mrs. L. L. Barefoot, formerly of Cherokee, now of Lometa, celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary with hamburgers, cake and drinks in their home, September 12.

Buddy Adams of San Saba Pecan has just returned from the National Pecan Shellers Association Convention in Las Vegas. Adams won an award for his estimate coming the closest to the USDA final figures of the 1992 national pecan crop.

Sheriff John Benner and the San Saba County Sheriff's office, in conjunction with the 33rd Judicial Drug Task Force, arrested one suspect on the delivery of the controlled substance cocaine.

Custard Pie (100 year old recipe) 4 eggs 2 1/2 c. sugar 3 tbs. flour 2 c. milk 1/4 lb. butter (or 1 stick margarine, melted) 1 tsp. nutmeg Mix all ingredients well and pour into unbaked pie shell. Bake in moderate oven (350º) until firm.
