National Senior Citizens Day shows increase in elderly population

Did you know that August 21st is National Senior Citizens Day? In Texas, the population of those aged 65 and above has increased at a faster rate compared to the total population. From 2.6 million in 2010, it has grown to almost 4 million in 2020, with their share of the population increasing from 10.3% to 13.5%. This is due to the 'Baby Boomer' generation, born between 1946 and 1964, who are now entering their senior years. With increased life expectancy, this large cohort has contributed to a significant increase in the number of older adults in the state.

The increasing elderly population in Texas presents both challenges and opportunities. Older adults bring with them skills and experience to the workforce, but they may also require more healthcare and specialized attention. Accessible and affordable housing, social support, and age-friendly communities can improve their well-being.

According to our projections, the population of individuals aged 65 and above is expected to continue to grow significantly in the coming decades. It is critical to acknowledge and address the unique needs of older adults by providing them with the necessary resources and support to age with dignity, independence, and a high quality of life.
