Public concerns related to the Maxwell Crossing (low water crossing bridge) area on CR 350 have been communicated to the Sheriff’s Office and Commisioner’s Court. Concerns for traffic and public safety as well as compliance with other state laws were raised.
The San Saba County Sheriff’s Office, San Saba County Attorney, and the San Saba Commisioner’s Court have decided to make a concerted effort to address these concerns.
The Texas Supreme Court has classified sections of the San Saba River as a navigable waterway. This classification designates the riverbed, which is only the area between the river banks, as public property. Nevertheless, laws with strict penalties exist for improper river access, littering, illegal parking, roadway obstruction, and any activity that obstructs the water flow.
Violations of state law will be enforced. Among those violations are:
• Structures illegally erected in the river.
• Illegal littering and dumping of trash, illegal fires, and illegal drug activity.
• Illegal graffiti.
• Illegal operation of motorized vehicles accessing and in the riverbed.
• Illegally parked vehicles on the bridge (obstructing the public roadway) and in the right of way.
The area is being patrolled on a regular basis, and violators will be subject to citation or arrest. Most of these offenses are a Class C misdemeanor, which carries a penalty fine up to $500.00 on each offense.
