Well, hello San Saba loves, and we are in the countdown to the end of summer! I bet many of you are preparing for the new school year. I am willing to bet mom wishes at times she could pack me a lunch, give me a loving kiss, wish me a good day, and have someone else be responsible for my life lessons.
I have been so excited to tell you about the magic we experienced this past week with mom’s nephew, Geoffrey. On Wednesday, we went to Galveston, and this dachshund got to put his paws in the sand! Mom had no idea how I would react to the water, but I crossed the great expanse of sand, waded right into the warm, salty, brine without a moments hesitation! The day was hot and windless, the water calm with only occasional ripple waves, but when the first one came toward me, you would have thought it was a monster as fast as I moved back to the sand! We left the beach, drove to see age old Victorian castles next to small frame houses weathered by wind, salt and time as we headed toward the historic Strand for lunch.
Mom told me The Strand reminds her a little of walking the sidewalks of San Saba - small, family owned boutiques and special shops. We had lunch on the patio of a place mom used to go when she was a legal policy analyst with American National Insurance, a looming white, skyscraper nearby. We met a lovely family there who had two dachshunds at home; they fell in love with me! Even Geoffrey thought I was a sweetheart, and he is a cat guy! It was such a great day!
It is said you can never go home again, and while mom is certainly not the same person she was when she was born in Galveston, the base of who she is has roots there and that will never change. I see San Saba in mom, too, and I cannot wait to visit you guys, sit with you guys, and share the life mom knew there, too! We love you to chicken bits!
