The July 2023 Yard of the Month is 1407 W. Dry, home of Mike and Donna McKinney.
Donna has begun to redesign the yard - taking advantage of the abandoned driveway by stacking the old driveway to create a stacked stone wall, creating a dry stream bed in one of the old trenches which the cement stones left behind. When the rains come, this dry creek carries the overflow of water away from the house. Pathways lead you to a shaded seating area out around the house. Layering in some Texas natives and evergreen shrubs are hardy perennials, creating a sanctuary for the birds with feeders and baths. Spring vegetable garden in the back included bokchoy, snow peas, lettuce, broccoli, onions, carrots, green beans, beets, cucumbers, jalapeños, tomatoes, green beans, zucchini and butternut squash with zinnias and marigolds to attract the pollinators. The newly planted orchard includes peach, pear, plumcot, apple and plum.
