A Word from Wayne

It is a great day to be a Dillo! Back to school plans are being finalized, parent letters are going out and registration starts next week.

What I have discovered is people are on information overload, and everyone thinks their information is right. Some of the medical professionals I have spoken with have given me the most honest answers about the coronavirus. They simply do not know how this virus works. If our experts are not sure, I am amazed at the number of people who are very confident with their facts about COVID-19.

This virus is a moving target. Our state officials have given us a target to aim for, and that is kids back in school. With that comes a huge cry from all stakeholders that says, What about me? What about the teachers? What about the kids? What about the parents? What about the economy? What about testing? What about masks? What about my job?

In Steven Covey’s book, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, he promotes the concept of a Win/Win outcome in decision making. I wish Mr. Covey were still alive because I would like to see his response to the pandemic. It seems we are in a Lose/Lose situation. Headlines in California said, “Teachers win, parents and kids lose.”

In the medical profession when a patient is admitted to the hospital experiencing trauma, one of the first things they do is put an IV into the patient to help stabilize their vital signs. People seem to be in a bit of trauma right now, so here is an IV. In the medical field, IV stands for intravenous. For education, we will call it INFORMATION and VALUE.

At SSISD, we will give you the best and most accurate information we can. We value all our stakeholders. Teachers, students, parents, staff, grandparents, and officials, you are important to us.

For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. For every question answered, there are two more questions asked.

We have two options before us: do nothing or do something. Doing nothing has never been a good option, so let’s do something. Let us do what is best for our children.

The plan we will be presenting attempts to resolve as many concerns as possible while maximizing safety. It is a balancing act. Some have described the process we are experiencing as building an airplane while you are flying it.

I will close with part of the lyrics from country artist, Rodney Adkins, “If you're going through hell, keep on going, don't slow down. If you're scared, don't show it. You might get out before the devil even knows you're there.” Go Dillos!
