Volunteer Fire Fighters drop everything to take on wildfire

County volunteer fire crews battled a wildfire last Saturday evening along CR 362 in southwest San Saba County.

Suppers and family time were left behind when crews were dispatched at 6:45 p.m. to the blaze, which grew to 80 acres before the fire was under control. The rough terrain hampered initial efforts, but Commissioner Pat Pool immediately dispatched a county maintainer to cut fire lines and to arrest the progress of the fire.

Firefighters quickly contained the blaze Saturday night, and the Texas Forest Service responded with crews to monitor the fire overnight. Volunteers from the Cherokee and San Saba VFDs, along with the Forest Service, returned Sunday to extinguish remaining hot spots.

The cause of the fire is undetermined, but it may have been caused by a spark from mechanical equipment.

A quick response by the San Saba, Richland Springs and Cherokee volunteer fire departments was credited with stopping the blaze before it grew to a conflagration.
