In 2012, with the collaboration of the Tocker Foundation of Austin, the Friends of the Rylander Memorial Library, and the San Saba County Historical Museum, five Traveling Trunks were designed and built with the students of San Saba County in mind. These rolling suitcases packed full of hands-on resources are now available online to public and homeschool teachers, youth organization leaders, and other residents of San Saba County who are looking for a fun and educational way to immerse students in a moment of history and science. The trunks include period replicas and artifacts, books, maps, posters, music, DVDs, games, and a Teacher-Docent Guide with instructional tools such as primary sources, grading rubrics, TEKS, and lesson plans.
You have the wonderful opportunity to check out each of the five Traveling Trunks from the library using your library card. Just go to the Rylander Memorial Library website sansabalibrary. org and find Kids & Teens>Kids & Teens Home<Traveling Trunks (link in lower right hand corner under “Featured Topics”) to find the Traveling Trunks page. There you can choose from the following trunks:
• Water: San Saba’s Vital Resource
• San Saba County Wildlife: Animals of the Woodland
• As Our Dream Changed: The Importance of the Sears & Roebuck Catalog
• Pecans: San Saba’s Unique Resource/Industry
• San Saba County Patriotic and Community Trunk- houses information to inspire and assist in planning and producing community celebrations.
All trunks contain activities that are or can be made relevant for all levels.
