It was a long road, about five years in the making.
The ground prepared, plumbing put in place, foundation was laid, grass put down, sprinkler put in, sign put up, rules put up, ADA certification obtained, and many other things going on in the background that we never realized were happening.
But now - it is a reality. San Saba has our very own Splash Pad!
A crowd of over 70 came to the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at the Stan Weik Memorial Splash Pad on Tuesday, May 28th. There was complete cloud cover, but the high winds had not hit just yet.
City Manager Scott Edmonson opened the ceremony and welcomed everyone. He introduced the City staff, City Council, EDC, and City employees that were present and thanked them for all the hard work they have done to help make this day a reality.
City Manager Edmonson reminded everyone of the long road to make the Splash Pad a reality, about five years. The Splash Pad was a dream of the previous City Manager, Stan Weik.
The family of Stan Weik was introduced. The family members present were Joanne Weik, Stan's wife; James and Leigh Johnston along with their kids: Christopher, Hope, Nolan, and Ethan, from McKinney; Karl and Jessica Weik and their daughter Sophia from San Antonio.
Mayor Jordan spent some time talking about Mr. Weik, his attitude, and how he always had excitement and vision of all the possibilities for San Saba, Texas. He noted how appropriate it was for the Splash Pad to be named after him.
The beautiful stone sign was donated by Tony Jacobs.
The Splash Pad was started with the big feature of the water tower with the ability to add around 10-13 more features in the future. The plumbing is already in place for them. The features cost anywhere from $5,000 to $35,000 per feature. The hope is to budget for adding a couple more features to it every year, and features can also be donated.
There is the ability to move the features around from year to year. They can be taken down after each season and stored to help preserve them. The features can also be rearranged on the pad.
Even though the official opening of the Stan Weik Memorial Splash Pad was on May 28th with this Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, it was opened in time for kids when school let out for the summer last week. And they have enjoyed it!
The weather has been interesting, but there have been breaks in the storms and weather alerts to allow kids to enjoy splash time at Mill Pond Park!
This has been a long process with COVID, costs drastically going up, not being able to get parts for a long time, contractors going out of business, etc., but it is now a reality!
So kids - (and adults, too!) come on out and enjoy everything Mill Pond Park has to offer - including the Stan Weik Memorial Splash Pad!
