The Kurk Fire began on September 8th, burning approximately 824 acres in San Saba County. The fire was reported 100% contained as of September 13 around 5 p.m. Despite the size of the fire, no structures were lost. The fire brought a tremendous response from our local departments as well as mutual-aid agencies from surrounding areas, with numerous firefighters and emergency personnel working together throughout the incident. Several water drops and additional aerial fire suppression support assisted crews on the ground. An incident of this size takes an enormous amount of manpower, equipment, coordination, and cooperation, and we are incredibly thankful for every local and mutual-aid department, firefighter, first responder, and support agency that answered the call to help protect our com-munity.
Sadly, the Kurk Fire also resulted in the loss of one life. A separate investigation into the death was conducted jointly by the State Fire Marshal’s Office, the Texas Rangers, and the San Saba County Sheriff’s Office. The investigation determined that the circumstances surrounding the fire and the loss of life were accidental. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the family and loved ones affected by this loss.
Our local volunteer fire departments have expressed their sincere appreciation for the incredible outpouring of support from the community throughout the Kurk Fire response. At this time, departments are well supplied with drinking water, but there are always opportunities to support the volunteers who give so much of their time to protect our communities. We encourage our community to continue supporting our local departments, including Cherokee VFD, Elm Grove VFD, Richland Springs VFD, and San Saba VFD, throughout the year. Some upcoming fundraisers that offer a great way to show that support include:
• Cherokee VFD Fish Fry & BBQ - September 26,
• Richland Springs VFD Fish Fry - October 3,
• San Saba VFD Steak Dinner - November 6
• Elm Grove - 2nd weekend of June We are incredibly fortunate to have dedicated volunteers who answer the call when our communities need them, and we hope everyone will continue to show them the same support they so readily give to San Saba County.
