The regularly scheduled monthly board meeting of the San Saba County Historical Society met Thursday afternoon, July 6, 2023, with President Lynn Blankenship presiding.
The Board agenda included upcoming plans for possible expansion of the museum, funds, grant writing, and developing and enlarging the use of local oral histories from auditory tapes and CDs. The oral historical traditions passed down from one generation to another is a key component in increasing the rich and numerous museum artifacts, and it is hoped to develop these local stories from both English and Spanish speakers in detailing the historical significance of early residents of the county.
As an example, Dr. Stan Burnham, 99-year-old local resident, has accumulated much information from all the many San Saba County cemeteries as a fascinating resource to the county and the museum! His knowledge and experience is a phenomenal addition to museum artifacts!
This month, on the morning of July 24th, museum board members and any interested parties are invited to neighboring Goldthwaite to the Mills County Museum for training in developing oral histories conducted by Dr. Elissa Stroman, Assistant Archivist for the Southwest Collection of Texas Tech! All are welcome!
If you have not visited the museum, join the many others who stop by to enjoy the wonderful museum. The interesting museum is kid friendly with activities like mini-scavenger hunts to keep children engaged while their parents wander and learn about fascinating San Saba County history from three centuries!
