The Richland Springs Report

Spring break has arrived, just in time to give us a week to recover from our time change. I guarantee it will take me all week to get my brain to understand it must go to bed earlier, sleep, and wake up at a different time. I’m not making bets on the success of this brain transformation. I noticed many in church this morning were looking a little lost. My topic was 'we are sheep' for class this morning, and I felt like I was a sheep waiting for someone to tell me what to do. I guess I must have something about which to bleat.

Everything is in bloom; Cedar fever has given way to Oak sniffles.

The trick will be to get a good rain, and we are also bound to have another frost. I put my lemon trees out, but I’ve put them back under cover because of the next week of colder nights. Russ says I have messed them up by bringing them in for the winter. They are full of young fruit thanks to their warm winter. Hopefully, the little lemons will grow and stay on the branch.

I love this time of the year because I can sit on my front porch and watch nature in action. I saw the first hummer Friday. I’m afraid I didn’t make him very happy since I didn’t have any feeders up. I have fixed that issue for the next little hummer flying through. I saw a flock of cranes heading north last week as well, and a beautiful Monarch butterfly paid me a visit. Today, I had to sit there with a shawl to protect me from the North wind. God is so good.

Our school kids participated in a reading event last week. If you saw strange garb wandering around, it was because the kids were asked to dress up as their favorite book character. Friday was a half day, and the elementary kids spent the morning reading and earning prizes for reading. Guest readers were brought in for the younger children.

According to the reports I had from the kids, it was a fun time.

It may be spring break, but many students are involved in sports, One Act Play and stock shows. That means parents will be busy. I’m sure by now everyone has heard that Mark Wise was attending the Houston Stock Show when he suffered a heart attack. He will undergo bypass surgery. Many prayers have gone out for his health and his family.

The buzz around town is for the upcoming Richland Trade Days onApril 15th. Vendors from San Antonio, Abilene, Fort Worth and several other large towns in the area. Please pass the word around to all your friends so we can fill the town with buyers as well as vendors.

The Feedlot will be open for business from 5 a.m. until 5 p.m. I hope to see everyone there.

Keep your eyes fixed on the school website. There are so many spring sporting events happening. Coach Burkhart is asking for donations to put in a new tennis court to replace the ones that live under the elementary school building. He has been able to secure an excellent price for the work. If you want to support our tennis teams, please contact Coach Burkhart.

A benefit was held last Saturday for Terri Alcorn to cover burial expenses. Stephan Thornhill, Bea Soto’s grandson, is in the hospital with serious blood infection and needs prayers. Vicky Moreno is still fighting cancer. Weldon Faught had surgery to repair his broken hip and is in rehab. Richard Maultsby is fighting leukemia.

Many others in the area need our prayers. Donna Hill and Kathy Davee are recovering from bouts of covid. Both are feeling better.

Please pray for our sick, for our government, for Ukraine and the situation with Russia and China. Our border needs to be closed so that cartel activity can be kept away from our border states. Most of all, pray for our precious troops and their families.
