Is Old Good? Good?

Some of the things that I have are old. There is nothing wrong with old things. I mean, somehow, I even got old. I don’t feel it or want to believe it, but I’m wayyyyyy over the hill. I’m going downhill so fast I have worn the brakes out and just can’t stop—and it gets faster, it seems, every day.

One of the things that is old that I enjoy, is the Bible—the Word of God. Though this book is thousands of years old, it is still new and refreshing to the soul. The Bible has some great lessons for us. Let’s note a few.

First, it tells us about the creation of all things and the Mastermind and Designer of all things good. Genesis 1 is where it all began. Sadly, after God had made everything and said it was good, sin entered our world. Satan would come to the Garden of Eden with deceptive temptations and cause man to be separated from God.

That brings us to a second theme in the Bible—obedience. God has given us all things, but He has also given us guidelines to live by on a daily basis. As we read through the Scriptures, we see man following his own ways and not listening to God. When they were to be faithful to Him, they made other gods that they bowed down to and worshiped that was opposed to the instructions he had given them through Moses at Mount Sinai. (Exodus 20)

A third theme of the Bible is the plan that God had to redeem (buy back) His people when they sinned. It came at an extremely high price—the death of His Son, Jesus Christ. The beauty of this is that God knew that man would sin and as a result had provided for this redemption before He even spoke the world into existence. Listen to what Paul said in Ephesians 3:10-11, “that the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known through the church to the rulers and the authorities in the heavenly places. 11 This was in accordance with the eternal purpose which He carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord,” (NASB) Jesus and the church was part of the plan of God.

As we get ready to end this year, it would be a good thing to make a resolution and keep it as best you can. That resolution would be to read the Bible all the way through this year. There is so much more to learn than what I had room to write.

The Bible is old, but its principles and teaching are relevant to us today as they always have been. Read it for instruction, practice it for a happy life and teach it so that others will be saved as well.
