Lessons from Colossians

This past week, I was reading through the book of Colossians. This book, written by the apostle Paul, speaks of the preeminence of Christ. Along with this, there are several passages that are important for us today to listen to and apply to our lives. Let’s see a few of these: Colossians 1:9-10, “...we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10 so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;” (NASB) Paul encourages us to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord.” Colossians 1:15-17, “He is the

image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. 17 He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” By Him all things were created, He is before all things and holds all things together.

Colossians 1:18. “He is also head of the body, the church;…” The only head of the body, which is described as the church, is Jesus Christ.

Colossians 3:2-3, “Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. 3 For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.” Set your mind on things above. How much do you do this? Many people today seem to think this world is all important and think little of God or the spiritual things in life.

Colossians 3:17, “Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.” Everything we do in this life, word or deed, is to be done in the name of Jesus. Are you doing all things in a way that He is glorified?

Colossians 4:2, “Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving;” Prayer is so important for us today. Devote yourself to it. What kinds of things are you devoted to? Is prayer one of these things, or do we just call upon God when we need something or are in trouble?

Colossians 4:6, “Let your speech always be with grace, as though seasoned with salt, so that you will know how you should respond to each person.” The way we talk is important to our God. Do we use curse words, belittling others, or are we trying to encourage others by our speech?

Colossians is a powerful little book, and there are so many other important things Paul told them, and us today, as we read God’s word. Take time to read this book if you haven’t lately. And let’s all practice these things in our lives. We must heed God’s Word and know what He desires of us.
