Hello, my San Saba friends, and how have you been this past week? I sure hope life has treated you well. I have so much to tell you - so I best get to reporting my Herman news, or it will be next week and time for another column to be printed!

As I mentioned, dad is officially in the old man bracket of life; he is 80. Well, even though he said he didn’t want to do anything for his birthday, mom asked Shawn to contact all his siblings to see if they could come up here for a birthday weekend with dad, and sure enough, they did! Shawn rented the most beautiful ranch house for him and siblings called The Three Sisters.

The celebration actually began Friday evening when Shawn and my oldest brother got into town and stopped by the house. Shawn came through the door, and I danced like Fred Astaire through the kitchen to greet him! I am always the first in line for hugs, and then they hugged dad, mom being last. Something so amazing happened when Tony hugged mom…so sweet and tender. Here is the thing...Tony was 11 when mom married dad, and he was searching for someone to love and take care of him. And mom stepped right in to give him exactly what he was looking for. Mom and Tony had not seen each other in quite some time. So when they hugged, they clung to each other, and Tony had tears rolling down his face. It was so loving and beautiful I didn’t even bark like I normally do when someone hugs mom. We got up Saturday morning to head to the ranch, and mom had her black bean dip, guacamole dip and chips ready to go. I was trying to rush everyone along, but quite frankly, that was like an ant trying to hurry an elephant down a road! Anywho, we finally arrived at the ranch, and on the porch there was Lani, Roy and Shawn waiting to give us big old welcoming hugs! I was overwhelmed by my surroundings…oh my very goodness! The place was so beautiful! The only thing I didn’t like was the water moccasin that went across the grass right in front of me and dad while we were walking in the front yard. It was enormous and was heading toward the pond! Nope, I did not like that at all! I did, however, love watching Shawn and Dean catching and releasing fish in the pond, eating grilled chicken and hugging all the people I love!

I would sincerely like to thank Celia Bell for bending her rule about not allowing dogs on the property so I could be with my family for dad’s birthday celebration and telling him I am a hoot because of what I write in this column. I am an important part of our family…I am the boss. One thing about being a boss - you look at the environment for which you are responsible, and if it is satisfying, you can smile, give yourself a hug and say…I am pleased. I can tell you, my San Saba friends, I am very pleased! I hope you have a wonderful week until next we speak. I love you so much, and thank you for being!
