Happy Herman's Hideaway

The Color of Love

Hello, my San Saba stars of wonder and what has this past week taught you? Yes, this is a pop quiz. Surprise! I can honestly say for myself it has been quite a learning curve and I have been driving a car without a steering wheel, so your imagination on that one. Yeah, my sweet loves, I am not well, in fact, I am extremely unwell. But hey, I am short, life is short, underwear is short; let’s have fun!

How stupid do humans think dogs are? Seriously, yes, we drool, lick parts of our body, even though washcloths and paper products are readily available, love the smell of filthy socks, shoes, and dead animals, but trust me, trying to disguise medication with cheese or in our food is ludicrous. Give us break!

I am on a lot of meds right now and dad puts them in my food. I heard him tell mom…"I don’t understand; he ate all the food but not the pills.” Um dad, of course I did! Did you never watch Sesame Street and see the segment ‘Which of These Things are Not Like the Other’? I am a dachshund, not a dummy.”

Okay, I have decided mom is useless. I love her to pieces, but I have never seen anyone like her.

I collapsed next to her couch the other day which meant I wanted to be up there with her. The sweater I had on had these buttons going up the back and somehow when she picked me up, they caught on her arm and ripped holes in her skin!

Mom puts me down next to her, bleeding profusely from three different wounds on her arm, dad walks in from outside and yells…"What did you do!" I crawl under the blanket so the buttons cannot be seen; dad makes a bandage out of paper towels, wraps it around mom’s arm, and when I see it, my first thought is it looks like dinner wrapped and ready to go in the microwave! I must be the worst dachshund ever!

I told you I have been very sick. Well, let me dispel a myth. You know how it is a popular belief animals like to be alone when they are not well? Personally, I do not subscribe to that theory whatsoever!

I am not able to walk anymore and therefore rely upon the parentals for every little thing and seek their company, comfort, and support (figuratively and literally) every moment of every day.

There is no greater gift in life, and might I add, no greater challenge than to be a part of a struggle for life. Truly loving someone is not being there for the fun and easy times, but staying for the times when your heart is being shattered by not being able to love enough. I love you, my San Saba dears, and I hope you have an amazing week. Keep us in your thoughts and thank you for being.
