80 Years Ago October 7, 1943

Howard Gaddy has bought the Hayden rent house from Mr. and Mrs. Lum Hayden for his mother, Mrs. D. W. Gaddy. Mrs. Gaddy will offer the old San Saba House for rent.

Mr. and Mrs. Guy Bailey and little daughter, Mary Ethel, of Laredo, are spending a part of their vacation at the ranch home of Mrs. Bailey's mother, Mrs. H. F. Moore, near Bend, and with other relatives in this section.

Mr. and Mrs. S. E. Tilton of Edinburg have taken charge of the Hotel Coffee Shop and will re-open it at once. These people come to us well recommended and no doubt will make their eating place one of satisfaction.

Mrs. W. W. Faver spent the weekend in Austin with her son who is a student in the University.

Miss Mary Gage, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Gage of near Chappel, has been elected to teach in the San Saba public schools, succeeding Mrs. R. R. Hillman, who has resigned. Miss Gage, who will teach the second grade, is a graduate of Howard Payne College in Brownwood.

Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Dalton had a guest the past week, his sister, Mrs. T. A. Langford, of Goldthwaite.

The hide of the deer you hope to kill this season is wanted by the military authorities to keep a soldier or sailor warm on the battle fronts in the colder parts of the world. A. J. Langford, Dallas district manager of the War Production Board, appealed to deer hunters to turn all deer hides obtained during the hunting season into channels for the manufacture of military equipment, such as gloves and shoes for the Arctic, now urgently needed.

Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Kuykendall invited members of the San Saba County Historical Society to visit their ranch to see the original location of the log cabin horse stable that is the centerpiece of the San Saba county Museum. The Kuykendall family's donation of the log cabin horse stable was the beginning of the San Saba Museum.

The governing boards of Baylor Health Care System and Scott & White Healthcare announced September 30th the completion of the merger of the two health systems to form the largest notfor- profit health system in the state of Texas.

Welcome rains came again this weekend. Gladys Brister who lives at Thrall reported that they received 6 inches. The reports around the Bend were a little more than 2 inches. Again it was a slow soaking type rain which helped the pastures, but didn't do much to fill up the tanks which are badly in need of water.

David Gilger receives the Honorary Alumni Award for being such a loyal supporter for all San Saba High events for many years. The award was presented by Anita Miles, Charter Board Member, and Keith Shahan, alumni Board President. His wife, Barbara, was touched as David became an official 'Golden Armadillo!'

Dr. Charles Key presented a check in the amount of $225.00 to San Saba High School Ag Science teacher, Maegan Barnett, Dr. Key recently participated in the Zoetis Industry Support Program which donates money to the local FFA chapter based upon qualifying purchases during a set period of time. These contributions help to strengthen the local FFA chapter and help expand the opportunities available to students working to become future leaders in the ag industry. Thank you Dr. Key!

Juanita Rocha has been named Employee of the Month for September. Juanita has been working at Pecan Valley Nursing and Rehab since she was in High School, alongside her mother, Faustna Rocha, who was Employee of the Month last month. Juanita is a very happy person and brings light to even the darkest days. Thank you Juanita for all you do and congratulations on being chosen as Employee of the Month!
