81 Years Ago January 22, 1942

Serving as pen-pal to a large number of orphaned soldiers of the Catholic faith is Mrs. Max Touchon of Spring Creek, mother of eight children and one of the busy housewives of the community. With no near relatives in the present war, Mrs. Touchon, who is a writer of some ability, wrote to the commanding officer of different army camps for information on soldiers of the Catholic faith.

Mrs. Della Linn has had as her guests during the past few days her son, Warren Linn, a first class private at Camp Knox, Kentucky, and his wife, the former Miss Reba Jones, of Lometa, who spent several days with her and with other relatives here.

County Agent C. E. Tisdale, who took over his former work as county agent here on the first of the year, following his release from the army post at Fort Sam Houston, where he was inducted last March, has been recalled. He will report from here to Fort Sam Houston.

Doing their part in the University of Texas' civilian defense effort are Betty Jo Turner and Laura Kuykendall, of San Saba. They have enrolled for first aid instruction in one of the University's first Red Cross classes.

Hal B. Breazeale, who is in training at Fort Worth, spent the weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hal Breazeale.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lucas and family went to Brownwood to see their son, Odean, who was leaving Camp Bowie with a company who did not know their destinatiion.

Mrs. Quimby Ragsdale and her daughter, Miss Bobbie Lou Ragsdale, will spend a while with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Parks, while her husband is in New Orleans as a radio technician in a defense program. The family has been living in Ozona for the past several years.

W. C. White, who belongs to the pioneer families of this county, but now a resident of Fredericskburg, dropped into the Star Office. Mr. White was at one time, some 27 years ago, editor of the Cherokee Chief. His grandmother was Susan Gray, a sister of Buck Gray and his brothers and sisters, now deceased.

60 Years Ago January 17, 1963

Mr. and Mrs. Glen Jones are the parents of Mary Susan, seven pounds and 14 ounces, born Jan. 7.

Mr. and Mrs. Clem Guzman are the parents of Patricia Ann, seven pounds and three ounces, born Jan. 10.

Robert Lee Daniel, with the State Brucellosis Testing Program and now of San Antonio, was a weekend visitor in the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Lee Daniel and children.

Mr. and Mrs. Will R. Harris observed their 62nd wedding anniversary. A quiet family observance at their home marked the day. They were married Dec. 31, 1900 in Houston. San Saba was their home at the time of their marriage.

Guests in the home of Mrs. Ernest Oliver during the weekend were her children, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Oliver and family of Abilene and Mr. and Mrs. Russell Moses of San Antonio, also her grandson, Joe Oliver, with the Air Force stationed in Ankara, Turkey.

The San Saba girls' basketball team won a 51-38 victory over the Menard girl cagers at Menard. Coach Holmstrom stated that Kathleen Hector is a versatile player and that she plays forward and also guard when needed. Judy Woodward was high for the local girls with 37 points. Nancy Kidd made 10 points, Mary Jo Ellis, two and Kathleen Hector, two points.

The formal opening of the new San Saba County Livestock Show Barn will be observed with an open house according to Alvin Mays, 1962 livestock committee chairman of the San Saba County Chamber of Commerce. The construction of a show barn was listed in the plans of the San Saba County Chamber of Commerce at the beginning of last year. The plan has now become an accomplishment with the completion of the barn in time for the 32nd annual county show.
