June 19, 1951

San Saba Dollar Day which is sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce, brought another large crowd to San Saba. This was San Saba's second Dollar Day. One lady commented that she had to drive about town for some fifteen minutes before she was able to find a parking space. Merchants reported that shoppers were buying the many specials and bargains that were placed in their ads in the six thousand Dollar Day circulars which were distributed in San Saba's trade territory.

Miss Jane Grozier is attending summer school in Baylor University, Waco. Janie is majoring in Home Economics.

The San Saba Wranglers will furnish the music for the VFW Dances each night of the rodeo. The dances will be held at the Jaycee Hall west of town. Admission per person will be one dollar.

Unofficial returns from the road bond election showed a large majority of 309 for and 79 against. The bond, which was for $125,000.00, will be distributed among the four county precincts so that each will get its fair share of new farm to market roads.

One of the 372 students enrolled for the 1951 summer session at Lamar State College of Technology in Beaumont, Texas, is Walter I. Moore of San Saba. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur G. Moore of San Saba, Moore is a sophomore chemical engineering major. The newest state-supported senior college is Texas, Lamar Tech succeeds Lamar Junior College which graduated its 28th and final class.

This summer will be Camp Billy Gibbons 20th birthday–– the first summer camp was held in 1931 with C. L. Pouncey as Camp Director. There will be a celebration sometime during the coming camp period.

The Taylor Hardware Company, with Robert L. Rich as manager, has made extensive improvements in the interior of the shop. A nice line of enameled ware, all kinds of useful kitchen gadgets, and garden tools. New lines are still arriving. Show cases and new paint jobs have added to the appearance of the shop.

40 Years Ago

June 17, 1982

Two local boys were recently honored on their birthdays with a fish fry held in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Buck Martin. Mitchell Todd Martin, who was celebrating his first birthday, and Brian Reeves, who was celebrating the tenth anniversary of his birth, were both honored at the fish fry.

The Bend-Chappel Churches honored Marilyn Brister with an ice cream supper at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Pat Millican. Marilyn will be moving to Columbus, Ga. to begin work at the medical center there.

Three area students attending Angelo State University in San Angelo, are listed on the Dean's Honor Roll for the Spring semester at the university. Those listed on the 3.00 to 3.49 honor roll include Lawson Aleck Newby, a Finance major from Richland Springs; Rafael Enrique Romero, an Accounting major; and Renice Burnham, an undecided major from San Saba.

A most precious commodity, water to any ranch is life, especially at New Horizons Ranch and Treatment Center for boys and girls at Goldthwaite. Earlier attempts to locate water wells were to no avail, and it became necessary to haul water for drinking and cooking for the many children and staff at this facility. (This momentous task was made possible by Bill Gregg of Rising Star, who loaned a 1,500 gallon water tank for transportation of water from nearby Goldthwaite).

Jody Whitley lands shark in San Saba river!... A surprised fisherman, Jody pulled a 7 lb. Blue Sand Shark off his trotline. He also claims to have been bitten! (Thanks to the pranksters involved, Jack Reynolds and Dennis Hardman). The shark had been in the game warden's freezer just waiting for the right moment to appear!
