May 22, 1952

J. M. Walker, a prominent figure in farm and ranch affairs in this county for a number of years, was named president of the board of directors of the San Saba National Farm Loan Association at a special election.

Flood damage to construction machinery will delay work of erecting the steel superstructure on the San Saba river bridge north of San Saba more than a week, workmen reported. A practically new $25,000 dragline and a Ford tractor being used on the project were covered by the unexpected 27-foot rise in the river Saturday night.

Buddy Poppy Day will be observed in San Saba all day Saturday, with local Girl Scouts offering the brightly-colored flowers for sale on the streets of the business district. The artificial flowers, made by disabled veterans of the U.S. military forces, are sold annually to commemorate those who gave their lives in the service of their country, and also to provide a source of income to those disabled veterans who make the flowers.

Rep. Reuben E. Senterfitt of San Saba, Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives, gave the commencement address at Richland Springs for the high school graduating class. Honor graduates were Thurlene Wood, valedictorian, and Ruby Fay Martin, salutatorian.

Four of the contestants who will compete for the title of Rodeo Queen at the San Saba Jaycee World Championship Rodeo have been named by Bubba Walker, co-chairman with Jack Sullivan in the queens contest. Wynona (Boots) Hallmark will represent Richland Springs in the contest; while at San Saba the high school class representatives in the contest will be Gayle Dean Ellis (freshman), Gay Nell Jones (sophomore) and Ramonalene Reavis (junior).

May 18, 1972

Last Friday night, lightning struck and killed the Appaloosa pony, owned by John Berryhill, pastured on the J. D. Landers ranch in McMillin community. Berryhill had planned to ride his horse in the rodeo here in June.

San Saba cowboy Buddy Mays was announced last week as one of the top five moneywinners in bull riding this year by the Rodeo Cowboys Association office in Denver. Mays was fifth in the event with $5,394 in winnings.

Mr. and Mrs. Albert Lee Carsten of Shawnee, Oklahoma, announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Tawana June, to William Dale Riggs, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Riggs, San Saba.

Miss Patti Suzanne Hartley's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leon C. Hartley, have announced their daughter's engagement and forthcoming marriage to James Gage Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. James Gage Sr.

Roy Hight, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. V. Hight and a junior in Richland Springs High School, placed 6th in the State Ready Writing Contest held at the University of Texas in Austin. He advanced to State by winning 1st in District competition at Lometa and by placing 2nd in the Regional meet held at Blinn college in Brenham.
