The classes of San Saba High School elected class favorites for the 1972-73 school year. The freshmen class favorites are Marisela Romero and James Herrington. Sophomore class favorites are Melissa Watkins and Randy Christian. The Junior class elected D'Ann Singleton and Glynis Shaw as their favorites and the Senior class favorites are Elvia Romero and Tommy Creek.
W. D. Harrell of San Saba must be the turnip growing champion with big turnips measuring 27 and 24 inches, respectively, in circumference. Elmer House showed some recently measuring 17 and 16 inches which looked big, but Harrell's turnips are considerably larger. He bought his seed from the grocery store now known as G&R Grocery. They are the purple top variety. Harrell said he had grown some carrots, weighing two pounds in his home garden.
A plaque has been erected by Bend's State Community Improvement Program Committee, near Bend Telephone Exchange building on Highway 580. The plaque contains names of those having had pecan trees dedicated to them. These trees have been set along each side of the east side of the new bridge approach, being designated as Memorial Drive. San Saba Junior High boys successfully defended their title by winning first place in both the seventh and eighth grade divisions of the San Saba Junior High Cross Country Meet. First place in the seventh individual went to Hoffman from Llano, with Forrest Greenwood taking second for San Saba. First place in the eighth individual went to Louis Cisneroz of San Saba and second went to Manual Cantu, also of San Saba.
Bill Wood, 22, of Taylor assumed duties on the San Saba School faculty and will teach junior and senior high school social studies for the remainder of the year. Suzette Vann, daughter of Mr.
Suzette Vann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Vann, was elected Miss San Saba High School. Billy Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Smith, was elected Mr. San Saba High School.

Assistant City Manager Darrin Barker assumed the responsibilities of his office Monday. Darrin and his wife Kelly are graduates of San Saba High School. He is also a graduate of Texas A&M University. Darrin is the son of Richard and Kay Barker of San Saba and Kelly is the daughter of Owen and Linda Parks, also of San Saba,
San Saba Boys Golf Team placed 9th out of 26 teams last Tuesday here at San Saba. San Saba High School Golf Team scores are: James McNeely 80, Pat Potts 88, Chris Davenport 91, Phillip Cantu 98, and Thomas White 108. The San Saba "B" Team were Steve Hardy 94, Jason Tilson 96, Brad Everett 97, Jim Ellis 99, Buddy Bishop 102.
March 7th was the birthday celebration of Emilio and Angelita Calderon. Emilio is 80 years young and Angelita is 78. Present for the celebration were their 5 children and their families that totaled 69 members. Friends and other family members were also present. Lots of food and drink were enjoyed by all.
Nearly 1,000 families in San Saba County will enjoy Girl Scout Cookies in 1992. The four Girl Troops in San Saba sold 3,600 boxes of cookies for this Spring. Cookie Champ for Junior Troop 291 was Linda Sherry, Brownie Troop 294 was Jessica Felts, Brownie Troop 296 was Shi Ann Amthor, and Tara Ferrell was Champ for Brownie Troop 297.
Bobby and Helen Deeds had as during the weekend guests, Benny Deeds, Lacey, Kelli, and Randall; Bobby and Georgia, Bobby Edward and Billy. They had a very enjoyable visit.
San Saba High School Senior Michael Gonzales received the President's Achievement Award Scholarship in the form of $10,000 for undergraduate education. He also qualifies for as much as $18,000 worth of scholarships.
