December 31, 1953

Rainfall in San Saba during 1953 was only slightly above 50 percent of normal, records at the official gauge kept by San Saba Hardware show. Actual precipitation recorded was only 15.71 inches, while the average rainfall for the county is 25.93 inches. December was the driest month of the year, with only .23 of and inch of precipitation measured. January brought only .26 of an inch.

Mrs. Ollie Davis and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Shelton and children, all of Austin, and Mr. and Mrs. George Wagner and children of Waco were guests Christmas Day in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Baker Jr. Weekend guests in the Jim Baker Jr. home were Mrs. J. H. Baker and Mary Elizabeth Harlan of Fort Worth and Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Moseley and sons of Rochelle.

A birthday supper held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Jones honored Tommy Gean Harkey on his 22nd anniversary. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Tom Harkey, Mrs. Elva Harkey, the honoree and his wife, Henry Churchwell of Roswell, N.M. and the hosts. Mr. Churchwell is an uncle of Mrs. Jones and also a brother of Mrs. N. J. Griffay.

Mr. and Mrs. Tom Clark and daughter, Gretna, of San Angelo spent the past weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Steve Ballew.

Miss Betty Goode of San Antonio spent the Christmas holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ermer Goode.

M. M. Slawson of San Saba received a 10 percent award amounting to $20 at the Appreciation Day event sponsored at the courthouse building by more than 40 San Saba merchants.

A total of 30 families in the vicinity of San Saba received baskets of food, clothing and toys on Christmas Eve under the annual program sponsored by the San Saba Chamber of Commerce. Distribution was made through the courtesy of the City employees. In addition, a limited amount of used clothing, donated by various church groups and other organizations, were distributed to the needy at the same time.

December 29, 1983

Louis Crump announced that he is retiring from public office when his present term as District Attorney expires at the end of 1984. The district includes Blanco, Burnet, Llano, Mason and San Saba Counties.

Coleta Renea Flanagan became the bride of Wade Allen Maxcey in a double ring ceremony on Nov. 12. Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Flanagan of Robert Lee and Mr. and Mrs. Garry D. Maxcey of Richland Springs.

Super S Foods, doing business as Walter's Discount Foods, has announced a major remodeling for the San Saba store. Business has been good, and we are pleased with the reception San Saba and the surrounding county has given us said John Dierterle, President of Super S Foods. The remodeling will include doubling the existing Fresh Produce Dept. and adding a new Frozen Foods Dept., as well as an expanded Ice Cream Dept. A new meat market will enable our Market Manager to offer a complete selection of red meats, pork, and poultry.

James R. Cobern Jr. of San Saba was among 1,126 Southwest Texas State University students who filed for degrees awarded in winter commencement ceremonies Dec. 17. Cobern, son of Mr. and Mrs. James R. Cobern of San Saba received a bachelor of business administration degree with a major in accounting.

Santa and his tow elves were spreading Christmas cheer to all of the elementary and intermediate school Dec. 20 in the high school cafetorium. The jolly fellow and his two helpers appeared during intermission of a Christmas program presented to the younger children by the high school students.

Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Locker will be honored on their Golden Wedding anniversary with a reception given by their children December 31.
